Portuguese Knitting for Beginners

In this workshop students will be able to learn through simple samples of stitches the basics of the Portuguese Knitting Style:
– small historical framework of the Portuguese Knitting Style
– how to hold the yarn, the needles, the placement of the hands and the correct tension when knitting
– how to use the Portuguese Knitting Style in order to minimize movements and consequently reduce the risk of injuries typical of other forms of knitting.
– how to use the Portuguese Knitting Style in order to knit in a more efficient, quick and simple way
Drop Spindle Basics

Teaching the basic “how to” of spinning on a drop spindle. After being walked through the steps you will have time to practise with tutor support. All equipment is provided for you to use during the session. You will take home your first handspun and a kit to keep spinning.

Description:
Steeking uses a bridge of waste stitches to enable you to work entirely in the round in situations where ordinarily you couldn’t, eg when working armholes or making a cardigan. It is particularly useful for stranded colourwork, because purled colourwork is typically slow and difficult compared to colourwork that is knitted on the right side.
Many knitters are nervous of cutting the waste stitches in a steek. This class will assist you to overcome that nervousness, giving you the confidence to steek anything!
In class we will cover:
✔ Steeking stitch patterns.
✔ How to set a steek before cutting it.
✔ Options for reinforcing a steek.
✔ How to pick up stitches from a steeked opening.
✔ Options for finishing a steek.
Lace by Music

Description:
The lace by music is a type of lace knitting. Borders or edgings that were made by women in the most remote villages of Portugal.
These lace have the particularity of being all made mostly in purl stitches and for that purpose a special “code” has been created to pass along those patterns from generation to generation. This “code” is the so- called “music” of the lace and is composed of a series of symbols created by people who at that time didn’t know how to read or write.

When I am working as a “knitting agony aunt” in person or in print, I come across people who have never been taught how to read their knitting – to be able to work out where you are in the pattern by looking at the knitted piece.
At the same time I meet people who find charts off putting.
In this class we will see how reading your knitting and reading charts work together and how to match these to patterns.
This is a fun game based class to help knitters to understand their knitting, charts and patterns better
Introduction to Tunisian Crochet

Learn the main techniques used to knit Yorkshire Dales gloves with Yorkshire knitting expert, Ann Kingstone. As well as this practical tuition, during class Ann will also present fascinating facts and theories about the Yorkshire Dales glove knitting tradition, describing the characteristics of gloves in this tradition, their place in Yorkshire’s knitting past, and what she has learned from her research about the knitters who made them.
Needle Felted Sheep

Description:
Try your hand at needle felting with this adorable sheep workshop. Using a pre felted wool base you can decorate your sheep with wool curls and fibre. Everything you need is supplied, and you get a felting tool kit to take home (in case you need a little more time to finish off or you catch the felting bug). All wool used is British, a combination of Shetland, Jacob and Wensleydale.
Sharp needles mean this class has a minimum age requirement of 13 years, and those aged 13 to 16 must be accompanied by a paying adult.

Description:
Mosaic knitting is a lovely way of adding patterns to your knitting without the complications of using multiple yarns in one row. By simply knitting and slipping stitches the most beautiful patterns can be produced, from very simple to quite intricate. I aim to show knitters how to produce 3-5 different patterns and show how they can be utilised in different garments. I’ll provide various completed articles and these can be tried on, etc.

Description:
We will swatch a pretzel cable pattern featuring more than one type of cable in a knot design – this will include cabling with two cable needles and how to check woven cable patterns.
Then we will move on to a colour work cable technique which can be used in the pattern that will be provided in the workshop.
During the workshop we will look at cable charts and different forms of cable notations.
